Try setting the baud rate to 9600 in FMA. Although it is extremely unusual for the phone to say "charging".

I use baudrate 9600, RTS (Request To Send) enabled and DTR (Data Terminal Ready) disabled.

Don't know if this helps or not, but on my data cable thre is a button that switches it into charging mode and it charges off the usb. If that's on then it won't connect as a data cable and will also keep bring up the optimised charging message when you restart your pc.
Search for a witch on the data cable and press it the other way.

im new to these forums and i have a t610 with a data cable but i didnt get a cd with the cable
does anybody knw where i can download drivers that will work with windows XP and the t610, i only want to transfer files.

Do you have an original SE cable? If so, do you have a DCU-11 (USB) cable or a DRS-11 (RS-232) cable?
To download the driver for the SE DCU-11 (USB) cable, go to
Sony Ericsson - USB Cable Driver for Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP.
