Think charged sites, personal pages or free based ones can be hacked any time. I always imagine how the operator personal reads my sms. We are spyed here on esato too. Welcome in 1984.

It's not less secure, but it's described in it's policy, that they read your e-mails and they do not delete it even if you delete it permanently. That's the point of whole gmail hate IMHO.

Google says it in their policy. Maybe other providers (like microsoft) do it without you knowing it

Well, as the TOS states Gmail will monitor all your mail and you have to read and agree to the terms for a service and as you're free not to have a Gmail account at all, I'm not sure what the issue is.

Actually Google does not read your mail. From the FAQ:
Is Google reading my email?
Answer
Google is NOT reading your mail. Privacy is an issue we take very seriously. Gmail is a technology-based program. Advertising and related information are shown using a completely automated process. Ads are selected for relevance and served by Google computers using the same contextual advertising technology that powers our AdSense program. This technology enables Google to effectively target dynamically changing content, such as email, or news stories.
Because the ads and Related Pages are matched to information that is of interest to you, we hope you'll find them relevant and useful.
Google's computers process the information in your email for various purposes, including formatting and displaying the information to you, delivering targeted related information (such as advertisements and related links), preventing unsolicited bulk email (spam), backing up your email, and other purposes relating to offering you Gmail. Because we keep back-up copies of data for the purposes of recovery from errors or system failure, residual copies of email may remain on our systems for some time, even after you have deleted messages from your mailbox or after the termination of your account.
Google employees do not access the content of any mailboxes unless you specifically request them to do so (for example, if you are having technical difficulties accessing your account) or if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect Google or the public.
Google will never sell, rent or share your personal information, including your Gmail address or email content, with any third parties for marketing purposes without your express permission.
--------------
Do any of you worry about the spam filtering systems that read your email on its way around the internet? It's pretty similar...
