Some networks actually require you to use their smtp server if you connect via gprs. If you are using the virgin dial up number, you should put their smpt server in. I'd test that aswell to see if it works

I have tried all the suggestions but still to no avail - I am connecting via Vodafone GPRS. Perhaps I should change this setting ? I will give Vodafone a call later on to see if they can shed some light on what I am doing wrong and will post back any comments they have. Cheers !

I'm having a similar problem with Virgin & checking 4 mails from my P800 on O2 GPRS-it says it's checking, but doesn't get past that animation. Tried what's suggested in this thread

Success ! I finally got it to work successfully - I had to go onto the SE website and download the software settings for Email - you fill in the details on their website and they send you the settings by text. It worked fine and first time as well ! So now all is working perfectly with my K700i .... link to the settings as follows :
