will the size of your MS-Duo matter? and secondly, must you use Sony MS-Duo? there's cheaper alternative, Sandisk (from tw I think, twinmos), which is MG compatible as well.

@Dome
The size of your duo doesn't matter. So you can use any size up to the maximum of 128Mb.(Be careful because this MP3 player only uses MS Duo and NOT MS Duo Pro).
You can also use any make of MS Duo card you like but if you want to use the atrac3 system be sure to check that your alternative make is Magicgate compatible which as you say the sandisk are.(You don't need the Magicgate system if you ae just using MP3)
Hope this answers your question.

thanks for the reply,

I borrowed a ms-duo Sandisk 128 (MG compatible) from a friend, tested it. I have a msac-us30, so I use sony's ATRAC. Since the battery (energizer e2) my hbm-30 was pretty low, I inserted the sandisk ms and the hbm-30 auto-turned-off. I removed it, and turn it on again, inserted the sony 64 ms, it can play fine with 1 bar of battery life. I removed it, and inserted 128 ms, it turned off again.

It seems to me that size/brand may contribute to battery life. Maybe someone can confirm that as well. I'll try to get my hands on a 128 Sony MS-duo to test it.

Welcome to the esato forum
If you haven't already done so I suggest that you download the latest version of Sonicstage(Ver 2).
In sonicstage you should be able to transfer the songs to your Memory sick Duo I assume that sonicstage recognises the internal memory card reader on your viao.
Step 1 select Transfer and your internal card reader (from drop down menu)
Step 2 select your Album/Songs from the Library
Step 3 press the transfer button.
I hope this helps I don't have access to any viao PCs so I can't know for sure if it will work.
I have attached a picture to show the steps involved.

I must ask you a few questions about your vaio computer.
What model is it?
Does it have an internal card reader?
Is the card reader MagicGate compatible?

If you are using a third party external card reader you will find that that it will be impossible to use the atrac3 system as most don't support the magicgate system/drivers that sonicstage requires.
All I can suggest in the mean time is that you copy good quality mp3 files directly to your card and listen to those. I can give you a list of official sony card readers that do support the magicgate/atrac system if you want, but until I know what type of vaio system it is I can't help you much.
Don't give up it is worth it in the end
