Think branded fones are a kind of second division for the brands to advertise and sell the fones ' again '.

The basic business reason is lock in / reduce churn, big brands think that by giving you a branded product you identify with the brand as well as the product and are more reluctant to change product if you don't get the same brand.
What they totally fail to understand is that this may be true for 30-40% of the dumb mass market but probably 20-30% of the market know what they're up to and actively try to avoid it all costs and more importantly get actively pissed off by what they're up to, to the point of buying unsubsidised handsets.
It's another wonderful example of the big companies thinking they know better than the customers and trying to force things down on them beacuse it makes them money. Sigh, one day some company may learn the value of a brand is in making customers life easy and responding to their needs and priorities not the other way round.

It doesn't seem to be a problem here in Belgium yet. But I must say, you always pay the full price for a phone here! Even if u buy it in a provider package, the phone is not branded or locked!

I believe you can, but they are not cheaper, unless you buy it on contract.

would you rather have a branded subsidised phone, or an unbranded expensive one?
I know which 1 I'd choose
