NO. It's 1p per connection and guess what............
I'm on O2 PAYG.

I noticed my balance seemed to keep going down by 1p all the time & thought it was from SMS but the O2 Customer Service Line said the charges for connecting to GPRS (1p per connection)

il be surprised if o2 customer care are actually right lol..usually, when i ring them, i end up telling them things...even the data support team...bloody useless...lol

Yes I agree but in this instance it seems they are right as my balance only goes down 1p each time I make a fresh connection and not each time I load a page etc.

something somewhere is wrong then...my mrs got charged 40p for an hour online via gprs...lol...she with o2 and has the same sim as me..genie...dumb network...lol.

O2 seem to have always had problems properly charging for their GPRS. I think that's why it's been free for so long.

yep thats true...i think o2 is also the only uk network still using analogue switchers...lol...still..there confusion is my gain...lol.
