i think on an internet forum... where we effectively all look like a piece of text on a white background, with phone to our left... names are just about
everything

Vlammetje - I guess each member will be given at least 'one-time-change-username' oppurtunity here at esato! In my case, I originally intended to have the 'Jojo' username as it is my real 'cutie' name
! Though it was already taken
After been on board for 10 months now, I just can't find even a single member posting having that username
, the closest to date was Mojo-Jojo, looks like from the power-puff girls toon show
Yup! Maybe just a one-time change will do, though the member will try to make up his/her mind on the 2nd one as it would just be his/her last . . .
I see some having changed theirs for quite a number of times already, perhaps 3 or 4

i see no reason why everybody should be given a 'one time change your username' included in their membership. Seems a bit overdone to me.

I'd changed once but had notified the change in the sign for an extended period

I have an opinion on this.
first, there are many members form whom this is perhaps the first forum they have signed up to and they had to think of an online name quickly and perhaps, later, regretted their choice preferring instead another name
second, we all change over time and I have friends, for example one called Johnny, who recently decided that was what he wanted to be called when he was younger but now prefers John.
members who are not well known and who change their username won't be missed so much from their old username whereas members who have alot of posts and are regular posters and therefore more well known tend to advertise their name change (orangeman, jazzy, jojo, etc to name a few) and so those who are likely to be confused by the change in name are not because of this advertisement of the name change
personally I see no problem with changing names though I suspect most people would only change once anyway and would have thought more about it second time around

As per @masseur's:

I guess a one-time change is only allowed! That's why member's should think a million times before sending @laffen that precious pm . . . By the time @laffen acts on it, the changer (member) must just have forgotten 'bout his request after all
!
