But I read somewhere that they invade your privacy and sell your info, so your inbox gets loaded with junk mail! Can someone please confirm?

well..... this may come as a shock to you..... but does anybody truly believe all the spam that comes in on say, hotmail accounts, is purely incidental and untargeted spam??
I very very seriously doubt it.
personally I've not received any spam on my gmail account and yes I do in fact use it. It's a google product and therefore it's obviously quite full of google adds. This is nothing special though as every other site has google ads nowadays
As for breach of privacy....... I have absolutely no illusions about the 'privacy' of any details resting with US based internet companies.
I think anything and everything is most likely accessible for higher and lower caused by all kinds of government agencies. Big brother is indeed watching you.
On the other hand I've nothing to hide and there is precious little sensitive information concealed in ANY email account i have in use so personally I'm not tremendously bothered.
All I know is after well over a month use I have yet to receive my first real spam mail...... whereas my hotmail and yahoo accounts are almost inaccessible because of the large quantities of unsollicited mail that's in them every day
And no gmail really is nothing special. It's convenient to use. That's about it.
Anybody want an invite?

@amagab - I agree. As a complete package (email, calendar, photo and file storing/sharing, web page, groups etc, etc), Yahoo is tops.
