I really do feel the move to integrated devices is all but inevitable. I would agree with the comments regarding smartphones becoming more powerful, more akin to mini-PCs, but I think the really interesting area will be in trying to make such devices as small as possible.
The major problem with miniturising smartphones is the display of course. There is currently research going on into holographic projection for use in displays, but we are still a number of years away from a commercial introduction.

Yes, displays and input devices are a real pain for the developers. This message was posted from a R520

Once the Flexible Organic Light Emitting Devices (FOLED) technology becomes mature that just might easily be solved within a few years.

Displays could be minimized or maximized by sliding in and out and just allowing the FOLED to roll or curve on the sides, IMHO.

In a long term view I think holographic technology will be the way forward. By combining technology similar to that found in a virtual keyboard, with a holographic display, it might be possible to have such a display with interactive properties i.e. the display becomes the input device. This would allow devices to be made much smaller.

in the long term view I don't think we'll be using keyboards much, except perhaps in noise sensitive areas

speech recognition and AI will be all we need

btw, while foled is a little way off, Sony are releasing the first OLED PDA on tha market. Take a look here

Voice recognition etc. may be possible and shortly available but I think as PDAs are often used "on the go" there are potential privacy issues. I probably don't want everyone on the train to know my information. This message was posted from a T68i

I once read an article on research into special 'contact lenses' capable of displaying information to the wearer and, which were responsive to input througn blinking.
I can just imagine the looks one would get as one sat in a cafe blinking like a madman!

I believe there will come a time when display may well be directly input to our visual cortex negating the need to even have our eyes open at all and I expect something similar for the other senses too

but, although a look into the distant future doesn't hurt of course, I do think we have started to stray wildly from the original posters intention for this discussion

I think we can all probably agree that smartphones will become 'smarter', taking on more and more functionality. In my own opinion we are not all that far from the point when smartphones will replace PDAs.

I think while the functionality will most likely become the extremely similar on both devices the seperate form factors will remain.
P900/P910 aside, most smartphones (6600 etc) have a small screen compared to a full blown PDA and for true useability for the mobile business man you need that extra size. I personally couldnt see myself with a PDA size device in my pocket when out in a club or something. there will always be people who dont want or need PDA functionality so there will always be a seperate market for smaller, simple mobile phones.
