Can't understand how you were asked for £400! I was quoted £200 as a standard upgrade price, and got it for £100 after pressing them a bit (couldn't really be arsed to argue for more as I'm only 10 months in since my upgrade to P900).
I was actually pleasantly surprised at getting it that cheap. It seems the networks have switched their focus from gaining market share to reducing churn, with upgrade offers (especially from Orange and T-Mobile) improving massively. Therefore, seems particularly strange that with an ARPU of £50+, you were quoted £400.
Smear campaign against Orange...???

you think thats a rip off? try going with T-Mobile. heres an example of my situation right now.
On t-mobile last year i paid £70 for a Samsung E700, and pay £35 a month for 250 texts and 150 mins.
However I'm Just about to swap to orange, where i get as SPV C500 (windows smartphone) for FREE, and i get 200 mins and 500 texts, plus full insurance with only £15 excess for £35 a month.
So, to be honest, Orange dont rip you off, ive spent almost £800 with T-mobile in 12 months and they wanted me to pay £200 for a P910 upgrade, so i told them where to stick their contract...

Orange upgrade prices are always MORE than the cost of a NEW contract. They wanted £300 for me to upgrade to P900 in febuary, I got a new contract with them and got the phone for £200. If you wanted to keep your same number but start a new contract guess what - YOU CANT because they want you to pay the upgrade price.
Solution:
LEAVE orange and transfer your number to VIRGIN PAYG, after 30 days Leave Virgin and start a new contract with orange and transfer your number from VIRGIN to your new ORANGE contract- result- you get a new Orange contract, same number, cheaper phone.

I think Jahed has left this post. It doesnt necessarily depend on you monthly spend, its about the tariff you're on. For someone who spends so much on mobiles why just not pay for the phone?
:~)
