Signal strength is dependnt on phone and network. I've used t68i,t6xx series and my current k700i. I also experience fluctuation once in a while but so does my brothers (7650,6230). But the k700i cn pick signals in areas no one could not even 6230!

Try upgrading your software/firmware mate . . . As for the changing sounds, I've experienced that with my K700i back then (not firmware upgraded), the sound fluctuates when I am typing an SMS then an incoming SMS or call was received

I can make a call with 1/5 bars on my Z1010 using WCDMA and I don't have any problem whatsoever. The calls are always crystal so long as I have some sort of signal.

The reason that SE phones has fluctating reception bars is beacause the phone updates the signal bars more frequently than Nokia phones.. Nokia phones updates the signal bars very slowly.. which means that it doesnt show small fluctations while SE phones does. This has nothing to do with the actual reception.. .

Another thing to keep in mind is that one bar in a Nokia phone does not equal one bar in a SE phone... or any other phone.. What one reception bar means is up to each manufacturer.. BTW.. the reception display does not have to be linear.
Therefore compairing reception by just looking at the reception bars are not only pointless.. but also stupid.. since it does not mean a single thing..
