Yes @jplacson is right. Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries last longer if you regularly charge it before it goes lower than 15%. I experienced that with my old Samsung phone that used Li-Ion battery. I charge it everynight (overnight, 6hrs average) even if the battery level is just below 50%. It's been with me for 6 years and the until now the performance is the same as when I first had it 6 years ago. The phone is ON 24/7. Initial 14hrs charge, draining, and Memory effect only applies to Ni-Cad batteries.

USE SMAN! mine used to last a day with moderate use, now it lasts at least 6, it shutsdown every process, except necessary 1's!!!

Hi:

So far, many replies discuss how to improve battery life, just a few have touched on the topic of whether the initial 4-hour (by manual) charge is necessary (and subsequent discharge).

The P900 User Manual only states that the battery should be fully charged for at least 4 hours before first use.

It would seem that Lithium batteries do not have a memory effect, from the comments.

Nevertheless, I do face the memory effect. I did NOT charge the battery for at least 4 hours before first use, and charged it only after it was down to 50% or so. It seems as if that part of the battery that was used before first charge has lost its peak retaining ability, and that part that did get charged before first use retains charge better. I've gone through several cycles of charge and discharge, to no avail.

Shows that when you get a new toy, especially electronic, it's better to follow the manual and be patient!!

I never charged my phone for the initial 4 hours, and its not done any damage whatsoever to the battery. I would recommend a full discharge then recharge every once in a while.

i thought only nicads had 'memory'?? i have had the same battery for almost a year and a half and my p900 is still going strong on it. ( it is the battery from my p800 when i upgraded ) i leave it plugged in overnight to charge too.

Actually the memory effect as we know it (where each charge holds less and less power) applies only to NiCD and NiMH batteries.

NiMH was preferred since it didn't have much degradation throughout its life. But it still had some slight memory effect.

Lithoum based batteries have a different kind of memory effect... they are generally cycle based. They can hold almost a full charge for their entire life span... granted the cells are kept within their optimum conditions. Lithium must be kept 'excited' or charged for it to maintain its capacity... which is why a full-discharge damages the battery. You may not notice it since it will still hold a full charge...but you've effectively shortened the over-all life of the battery.

LiPols are a bit more robust... but still must be kept charged to extend their life span. If your phone hits low-bat mode by the end of the day, or when you get home... just charge it. No need to wait for it to die completely.

And it's also safe to charge-disconnect-charge again... within a few minutes. For example... phone in desk charger... half full... disconnect... go to car... car charger til fully charged. The reason you're not supposed to do it is cuz the molecules undergo temp changes when charging... if you allow the batt to cool off, then charge it again... it's the constant temp changes that damage the battery... not the fact that you disconnected it and reconnected it.

Do you remember the old phones that had a disharge function built it? You would select it in the menu and it would completely discharge the battery & very quickly too!
