The 12 month contract is pretty good, but the initial cost for the phone on that is £250. More than I can justify. For holding the contract for an extra 6 months I'd get £100 off and the £18 payments aren't much of a premium for the minutes and free texts i'd be getting. I've taken the point about upgrading though - I don't think it would be too much of a problem since this phone is pretty modern compared to what i've normally bought on PAYG. I would of course be able to keep the phone and ditch the contract or change to a 12 month contract after the first 18 months.
In general i'm just concerned what the specifics are of vodafones branding. The T-Mobile branding I have on my 630 is generally ok, except for the extremely annoying "T - Zones" butten on the bottom right of the screen - which doesn't change no matter what theme's I use. If I downloaded and installed S700 themes from the web, would they be completely effective or would I have unmatched graphics and shortcuts everywhere?

So far Vodafone S700i's suffer from the following:
1/ 'White Pixel' overlay anomalie in camera mode.
2/ Wont play MP3 ringtones unless from vodafone or DRM'ed
3/ An ugly customised GUI that can't be fully covered by changing theme (unconfirmed)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that removing the branding does indeed invalidate the warranty.

I know this doesn't directly relate to the S700, but more to Voda branding of phones in general. Anyway, when the T610 came out(ages ago), I was dying to get my hands on it. So I bought one through Vodafone. I was happy with the phone in general, however the branding irritated me beyond belief! It really ruined my experience of an otherwise good phone. I don't know to which extent the S700 is branded, but if it is similar to the T610 I wouldn't recommend it unless you don't mind blatant branding. (Again, I don't have any direct experience with the S700. this is all based on the T610).
Anyway, hope you get the right phone to suit you.

Anyway, debranding. Use Total Mulitiserver. Just search for the links. Buy a T28 cable from faceoffmobiles for £15 with one credit. Zap your phone with non branded firmware (full clear instructions on website) and Bobs your uncle, Roberts your fathers brother and all that - sorted.
No probs with Vodafone other than the branding, everything else is great. And good deal too.
Warranty? Well, service centres invoice Sony Ericsson directly based on your IMEI number. Debranding does not involve any dodgy tampering stuff that may invalidate your warranty. Personally I don't know how they'd know you've done it at a service centre so i'm not worried. Don't quote me on that though, i'm just being optimistic!!
