Thanks Peter. Is there a simple way of converting the MP3 files? I gave it a go but to no avail!

yeah.
I assume you are running the program. On the basic installed settings, you can drag and drop an MP3 onto the program and encode it. It will create a folder were the MP3 came from and put the encoded file in there.

I tried the DRM packager with my voda k700 and got nowhere. I tried all the various encoding combinations, but still no luck. maybe firmware version dependant?

I managed to encode an MP3 file and send to the phone. It shows up with the key-locked icon and able to play it but it still won't let me select it as a ringtone. Are there certain restrictions with the size of the file or anything?

You need firmware R2V001 in order to work. Your firmware version is from the netherlands, and they have not implemented the capability to play mp3 files as ringtones when converted by the DRM packager yet.

I was under the impression that R1N001 was a widely available vodafone version. my local UK service centre was updating phones with that last time I went in there and indeed nleeb68 is from Australia

R2Nxxx is mainly made for the netherland market but ALSO widely distributed in other european countries like Hungary (and other countries). R2Vxxx is mainly made for the UK market but ALSO widely distributed in the north Europe (and other countries). I don't know why Vodafone decided to have two different firmware versions for different parts of the world, but the only difference between them seem to be that one can handle mp3 files as ringtones when purchased from Vodafone Live (or re-packed by DRM Packager) and the other one can't. The R2Nxxx is therefore called (by Vodafone) the netherland version, and the R2Vxxx is called the UK version.
