You can use the Make Your Own Truetone Ringtone to upload mp3 ringtones to your phone. Check it out at:

No, R2Exxx will not work - sorry! It's an older firmware. You need to have your firmware updated to R2V001.

All,

I have been following this thread and those like it since I found my Voda branded K700 would not allow some carefully crafted ringtones I had made in anticipation of getting the new phone.

I since discovered all the issues that have been discussed at length and am currently awaiting Voda's response to my request for an unbranded phone. I fear I may be waiting in vain.

As a result I am prepared to look at upgrading it from R2N001 to R2V001 which a local service centre says they can do for nothing since it is under warranty. It will however be the latest R2V001 Vodafone version and I take it that following the instructions in this thread I will be able to then use the DRM system to use my ringtones.

Just want clarification before I go ahead and get the phone flashed...

Would someone be good enough to provide some confidence that this is a good approach and will not damage my phone or my voda account etc?

Cheers,
stardot

Changing from R2Nxxx to R2Vxxx will enable you to have mp3 files as ringtones if the above guide is followed. R2Vxxx has no downside compared to R2Nxxx - none at all! The only difference is that the R2Vxxx version handles DRM files.

By the way, I have the original Ericsson ringtones called "Mixed", "High", "Medium" and "Low" in both ordinary mp3 file format and DRM files. The latter works on Vodafone branded phones with firmware R2Vxxx. They are original tones extracted from a T68 and professionally resampled - sounds perfect and should have been included in all Sony Ericsson phones for those who wants ringtones that sounds like a real ringtone should!

I know that a lot of people are looking for those tones (but they can't be found), so just send me a pm and I'll mail them to those who wants them.

Works great! R2V001 has solved the problem for the branded K700 (as has been previously posted) and I used the DRM app to sign the MP3s I want to use. So this is a good solution and I will let Voda off the hook, still think they are cheeky to be charging for ringtones whilst barring native features of the phone.

Cheers for the guide - very helpful

I learned heaps here in a very short time!

Nice work all

Will.*

@muppetguy

Your firmware is R2A041, not RZA041. It's the oldest firmware around... update to R2V001 and everything will work as long as you follow the guide.

Hi All,

Just got a F500i which is a great little phone - apart from the lack of MP3's - I have been looking at this description on how to get this working but without success - when I try to upload the converted files - I get a message about the file cannot be uploaded - why? - where should I upload it to? - do I use the handset manager or something else?

I have also been reading a lot about the firmware - my version is R2E001 is this the latest one?

Thanks in advance for a quick answer

Pete

1. You have to drag the files to your phones main directory if you use a file manager to transfer the files to your phone. If you use an application that transfer the files without letting you chose directory, then the files most likely are being recognised and placed properly in your phone.

2. However, you cannot use converted mp3 files in your phone since your firmware is old. You will have to update the firmware to R2V001 in order to make it work. It's possible that you have managed to transfer the files correctly as described above (I really can't tell with your short description), but since your firmware is old and cannot handle converted mp3 files, it wont work anyway.

As you can see, the solution is in two steps: Having a firmware that handles the converted files and having the files properly transferred to your phone. For instance, if you manually drag your converted files to your phones "Sound" folder, then your phone can't handle the files properly (this is only the case with converted files; if you drag ordinary sound files that work with your phone without modification - like midi-files - then those files can be dragged manually to the sounds folder though). So, get your phone updated and follow the guide once again and everything will be fine!
