With all the Playstation Portable news floating around this week, I'll go ahead and post a couple little pieces of information that may be of interest to you.
First off, many people have been wondering how Sony is able to offer the PSP "at such a low price." The answer lies in its manufacture -- "close to 50%" of the components of the PSP are Sony-made. Obviously, this includes most of your game components, such as the Emotion Engine. But what parts aren't? The LCD is an ASV LCD from Sharp. While that's the only company name mentioned, other "external" parts include the memory and wireless LAN LSI.
A NikkeiBP article states that Sony plans on shipping 200,000 PSP units on release week, and 100,000 units per week thereafter. Within 2004, they plan on shipping a total of 500,000 units, and before the end of FY'04 (March 2005), the company plans on sales of over 1,000,000 units.
Some PSP quotes (all from Ken Kutaragi, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO):
"Even our employees were suprised [about the price]."
"The iPod only plays music, and it's 40,000 yen."
"We really waited to the last minute to decide [the price] this time. It was a secret even within the company. I didn't even tell my wife."
"We wanted to get that price 'sweet spot' right from the start."

Obscured by the news of the PS2’s surprisingly competitive pricing and decent battery life was the tidbit from NTT DoCoMo that they’re opening up their payment platform to companies outside their walled garden of i-mode cellphone sites. Specifically, it looks like they’ll be letting Sony PSP owners download games and other content directly to their new console and pay for it on their cellphone bills.

Holy Crap! This is a decent system.
It's got lots of connectivity:
IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi)
USB 2.0 (Target)
Memory Stick PRO Duo
IrDA
IR Remote (SIRCS)
Pity no bluetooth. Lets just hope the Sony boffins have embedded a damn web browser in the device. Put that Wi-Fi to good use!
