You can use an animated gif for a background with the flip open. Won't work (move) with flip closed backround though.
I've been using one for the past few days and it hasn't made too much difference to my battery life.

i got it to work the other way round - it works with flip closed but not with flip open.

try the ones on the disk that came with your phone. the one of the fly and the clockwork one. then use gifs that have the same settings - they should work.
