I know there some rumours floating round about the possiblity of an unlocked V800 appearing some time early next year? Is there any real evidence for these? Any precedents for them - ie phones (whether SE or not) which initially appeared as network exclusives and then later became available unlocked?
The documentation does state exclusive to vodafone at launch. How long this exclusiviity will last is unknown though. People do speculate about 2 or 3 months, but there is no proof to substantiate this and it might well be wishful thinking. It could just as easily be 6 months, apart from vodafone I don't think anybody knows.

Am I overly harsh on the Vodafone user interface? Maybe someone can post a decent pic or two (or links to ones)?

Have a look at the videos and images posted weeks ago in the V800 discussion thread. You can see the interface in them rather well, especially in rog's video. No need for more of the same imho.

You could always go to a store and ask to play with one if you're really determined to find out what it's like.

I saw those - I was just hoping, in a moment of wild optimism, that they didn't quite do the UI justice. But if they do, well, I'm certainly not buying the V800 ( There's no excuse for replacing a superior user interface with an inferior one...

the mere look of the icons and the presence of a VF live button doesn't change the way the interface works

I entirely agree with Cophia, and I'm afraid Silex that the market is driven by consumers and that is exactly the point. People on this forum tend to forget that we (or some us, anyway!) phone-geeks do not represent the majority. It is far more important to the mass-market to be able to choose between a multitude of features and services and nobody really cares (in the real world) whether or not they're phone is branded by their service provider (hell, most people don't know what the difference is, or even that there is one!).

As services become more complex and more functions converge onto the mobile, operator-branding and, more importantly, network-specific UI and features, will become the norm. Operators will not be prepared to miss out on the opportunity to increase the value of their own content as a revenue stream and also to differentiate themselves from each other. Unfortunately, horrible, crappy "3" have demonstrated the way forward in many respects, although unlocking access to full internet will also be a prerequisite as people simply won't put up with not being able to take advantage of the main benefit of UMTS (higher data speeds).

It is also worth remembering that when Mobile VoIP becomes a reality (PTT is just the embryonic stage of this development) the networks will lose a fortune on call revenue, and will have to find other ways to compensate, especially the mugs in the UK that spend £22bn on the licences! This is likely to be recouped in content and location-based services that will require operator-specific firmware to allow them to work.

So, in summary, this is the new wave, get used to it or accept 2.5G as the furthest you are likely to go...

I cannot understand the point of branding and locking a Triband phone to a single SIM card, when I work abroad I always use a local SIM as it is cheaper, consequently when I buy a Triband phone I insist on it being unlocked (or I will go somewhere else) lets face it I am buying the contract so what's the problem?

If Vodafone want to get ahead STOP locking and Branding (where branding stops the WAP setting being altered) and I will stay with you, keep locking and branding and I will go elsewhere.

branding is bad..... due to availability to certain areas..... eg. The rest of the world without Vodafone.... SE is loosing out potential consumers... even tho they can make it big wth vodafone... without branding they can make it even BIGGER.... I want a 100% SE phone not 80% SE & 20% Voda.... a phone without limitations, a phone that works without any additionals requirements... when i pay 100% for the phone, i want a 100% functionality... and that means i want an unbranded 100% SE V800!! Thats my statement ladies & gentlemen.. Vote for 02 elections.... hahahaha (made me sound like the president )
