Sounds like you did get screwed. You should have at least 34mb when the phone is empty.
My S700 actually has about 35.5mb

Yeah... that's what i noticed... everyone says they have 32 or so, and 34+ after they cleared most of the things...
Did you guys clear your files manually one-by-one, or through a master reset? Do you still have the remote control programs under the bluetooth menu, as well as the java apps that came on the phone?

Maybe they need space for GUI image rendering (remember it is a 262k colors device?) and some space for digital camera software. Some icons look more detailed than in K700 so it must taken more space.
