@owen:
Turns out o2 werent willing to match phones4u offer of either the s700 or p910 for free on the £30 p/m tariff - so never got a chance to see if i'd pass or not...

I may go with orange as i've heard they have a good student discount and tariff extras etc, plus i could get the D500 which is a ok phone, costs £50 but i would be credited £50 back as its a new connection and then another £50 for trading in a old phone, plus... i read something about discount for referring a friend
I tried this past saturday to get a d500 but the whole of london was sold out (orange stores - i know phones4u have them on o2).

Whats the credit check like at phones4u and CPW? Are they as willing to give a student a contract as o2's requirements?

if your already 18 then you shouldnt have any problem

i got an o2 contract for £30 a month when i was 16 in my mums name and she had a loan and 3 credit cards she was paying off

so if they passed her you will have no problem in getting one

and as soon as i was 18 i got a gd87 on finance which i payed off each month

try dialaphone for some good tariffs - you get loads of freebies and double mins and txts on some good phones

thats were i got mine

good luck

Can I suggest being totally truthful when you are credit checked.

As most people know, there are 3 credit reference agencies who compile credit data. In addition there is a separate database containing the answers you give to questions when being credit checked such as your employment status and salary etc.

Credit providers do look at the wide range of answers you have given as well as how true they may be in light of all the data you provide.

Imagine if you fail having given ropey details, if you then say 'oh hang on, I lied, can I try again' its not going to be a great start to your credit profile.

Find somewhere with a low deposit, build up a credit profile and you are less likely to have problems in the future.
