I'm afraid i've hardly ever worked with audio cds...i have all my music on mp3s n thats the way i purchase it...pirated of course
Anyways arent even audio cds at 44khz sample rate tho at 1411kbps or somethin like that. The mp3 files i'm usin as a reference are also 44khz but in either 128 or 192kbps. Maybe my ears aint that good at pickin up sound quality
coz frankly even i was surprised why i dont notice any difference but anyways there cant be much difference.

In my experience 22KHz is significantly different compared to 44KHz. You can already hear frequency clips and the overall sound is blunt. There also seem to be some imbedded hiss after conversion.
I'm not just guessing here I have actually made several experiments on this as this is part of my job and my hobby.
Anyway the K700 supports lower mp3 bitrates so there's no problem going as low as whatever suits you, as I've said we all have different tastes.

From my experience the actual song itself depending on it's genre and quality of the production can make a big difference as well. Try and use blur's song 2 as a ringtone (a great track but for me gets a bit messy when it gets going and I've even messed about a little with the compression size etc )
Through the headphones when out walking or whatever and with ambient noise in the background it sounds absolutley fine to me at 64kbps, certainly no worse than the radio (with a good signal)
Think it's really down to a personal taste and compromise based on the space available on the phone.

On a serious note tho, if you get the right tune then it can crank out a maseeeve noise. I have a faithless ringtone (we come one i think) and it's the absolute nads, have the ring volume on 5 and it's almost too loud with no distortion...and that I think is compressed at 128kbps

I use
CDex for batch processing and/or
dbPowerAmp for single conversions and conversion to mp4.
