It's pretty clear how it's done by the sites offering such service.

You buy a "credit", which is a user ID and password, from whoever offering this sevice. They're just re-sellers, really.

You connect a cable, use a free logger program, running on your internet connected PC. You enter the password and ID. The program connects to a server (in Ukraine, I believe). It verfies that you indeed bought a credit. Then the program reads and sends the log file downloaded from your phone to the server. The server calculates the unlock code for you. You then disconnect the phone, power it on, and enter the unlock code provided.

No matter whom you buy this service from, it's using the same server.

It's a new way to protect the creator's intellectual property right, I guess.

So is it possible to use IR for this to work?
Also has anyone you know tried it to see if it works and if so, could you recommend a site?

Here is the site that does remote unlocking. You will have to use a T28 data cable or similar. If you use a T68 data cable, it won't work.
