Maybe instead of gps, we can have direct satellite downlink for data....seens quite far off.

In all honesty, it is possible and i think given a bit more time and development, it will be available in 10 years.
The cost is the only thing that is holding it back! Remember the iridium group and its satphone venture??

demand for GPS build in phones is still low.
its not cheap either.
in time i'm sure SE phones will have build in GPS. like P3000. but for now a Bluetooth GPS accesoir would be better. one like nokia introduced a few months back

Irdium happened to be moto's satellite phone. It so happened, mrs moto was in the african shooting, mr moto could not get hold of her for a week. Back home, mrs moto asked mr moto that it is a shame that you being the communication header cannot contact her. And proposed of a global phone. One number for the whole world. Mr moto put 36 sats on air for Irdium. Apparently there is not a square foot on earth where Irdium will NOT have coverage.

The Motorola A925 has GPS today 3 Sweden has crippled it though, to make their customers use their own locator service. As i think about it, i think there are other current Motos with GPS as well, maybe the A1000.. not quite sure though.
I have a GPS receiver for my car (£90) and the software in my iPaq, used it last summer to navigate during vacation. I tell you it was worth its weight in gold in central Stockholm

Does gps work everywhere on the globe? There might be some areas where the US satellites doesn't have coverage. Do they?
