MS no longer owns any Apple shares. They sold them quite a while back, apparently for quite a profit. That aside, however, even the shares that MS bought in the late nineties would hardly be considered substantial. They bought 150 million dollars worth of Apple non-voting shares which, even at the time, would have been an insignificant portion of Apples total market cap.
I believe that Office for Mac exists for two reasons. One it helps keep Mac OS X a viable Windows alternative. In a world where MS is constantly being bashed for their monopoly status, the existence of alternative OS's helps. The second, less sinister, reason is that MS has constantly said that the Mac BU is one of their most profitable units. Why discontinue a wildly successful product.
PS. The others are right. Quick-office is the most pathetic piece of software you are likely to encounter in your life. If you want a decent handheld office package, get a Pocket PC or a Nokia Communicator.
