I am a bit rusty on my theory, but here's a short explanation:
The processor in the phone works on instructions (code) that are executed in cycles per second (commonly known as frequency, Hertz - Hz). All instructions executed are measured in Hz, since the processor requires an oscillator/crystal to keep track of these instruction cycles, it is
not related to Real Time. Therefore a Real Time Clock (RTC) is required to perform the calculations and convert the duration that instructions executed take into real time. This ensures that the user is not kept waiting for too long for a function to be carried out.
The RTC option will basically do a test by synchronising its internal clock with the network clock which has the real time.
