If you're a Mac user [or a Windows user running 2000/xp], you can use iTunes very successfully - details follow:
[these instruction relate to the Mac vsn of iTunes but I guess the menus are the same for the Windows vsn]
1. In iTunes, select the song you want to trim for your ringtone.
2. Use Get Info and select the Options tab. You can then set the start and end times for the song.
3. Close the Get Info window and then under Advanced menu select convert selection to MP3. It will create a new song in the library with only the selected portion of the song. You may need to go find it in the library. The conversion uses your MP3 bitrate setting in the Preferences for import.
**Remember to reset the start and end times of the original song afterwards**
NB: it may be safer to use a [legit] copy of an mp3 to cut up as I lost a couple of songs doing this, or at least, ended up with 30sec vsns of them!!

I use power mp3 cutter... its a simple but effective tool!!!
You can download the trial version....
Its a good piece of software
