There is also a PTT product called
VC which stands for visual communications. It is:
- Freeware
- Has messanging options
- Has a PTT facility that works it was described above (press internet button, speak, resulting file is sent via GPRS connection to destination party)
The only charge for this is your own costs for GPRS usage. I have installed this but have the following question that is not answered in the product documentation:
There are currently 1500 users of VC online. Where is this "place"? Is it a VC proprietary place or is this a product agnostic "place" where all PTT services are made available?
I haven't tried the PTT feature because I know of nobody else in the world who has a P910 with VC installed and I don't want to talk to a stranger just to prove the technology works

Anyone know how long the delay is between transmissions? I know with the Nextel its fairly instant. Also, do both parties have to have the application and therefore roughly the same phone? My GF has a POS Nokia phone so I doubt it would work that way.

and the time between transmissions for nextel/boost/any other like this is alwyas almost instant, just like a regular cell phone. However, for VoiP, i dont know, i have never messed with it.
Also, your phone has to support PTT, and will be built to support it. You both have to have the same service provider (like nextel) but nextel users and boost (just an example) users can not comunicate with PTT. I dont believe any nokia phones support the PTT function.

i was re-readind the pirst post in this thread, and he said his folks live 12000 miles away, so i am guessing he is talking about the VoiP type of PTT. but i could be wrong.

That is why Nokia, Ericsson and others also uses "PoC" to differentiate them from the traditional PTT.
Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) is a new implementation of the PTT concept. PTT is something familiar to radio/walkie-talkie (including Nextel and TETRA systems)
Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) is Voice over IP based on GSM/GPRS.

VoIP is a technology not only meant for the internet but for any network using the "IP" (as in IP in the TCP/IP communication protocol suite) network layer protocol - the largest of which is the Internet.
