If u read my post carefully u will notice that i stated that EDGE is an Air interface...its is only one of the two interfaces being used in a 3G/UMTS network. The other Air interface is W-CDMA.

A little about what CDMA is...:
CDMA:
Code Division Multiple Access; also known as spread spectrum, CDMA cellular systems utilise a single frequency band for all traffic, differentiating the individual transmissions by assigning them unique codes before transmission. There are a number of variants of CDMA (eg. W-CDMA, B-CDMA, TD-SCDMA etc.)

3GSM represents third generation services delivered on an evolved core GSM network. 3GSM services are delivered at a technical level on third generation standards developed by 3GPP, which utilise Wideband-CDMA and, in some markets, EDGE air interfaces

The 3GSM standard is significantly more powerful than any other wireless technology and that competitive advantage needs to be promoted collectively. No other standard offers the flexible combination of voice and data performance and capacity delivered by 3GSM/UMTS underpinned by Wideband-CDMA. No other standard is as open as 3GSM.

Hope this hasn't confused you further!

So, in other words, WCDMA is the most widely used for 3G correct?

EDGE is an advanced GSM service using circuit switched data, so it is 2G, GPRS is a data network only using the GMS network or UMTS network for access.

Correct!

EDGE is used mainly in the US. I am aware that it is also going to be used in South Africa, which ultimately would lead to it being used in many of the other African countries too.

some networks in Europe that could not get the UMTS licenses are now going to upgrade there 2G-GMS network with EDGE to keep up with UMTS of competetors.

UMTS never made it here, infact it goes like gsm, gprs, edge, and 3g here. There is also cdma2000 or cdma1x which is pathetic. This message was posted from a K500

Not yet whizzkid...i think your dreaming!

3G/UMTS has yet to mature so it will be about 2years until we see the next major shift.
