Well, I don't know anything about Orange branded k500i, but on a non-branded one, apart from the @ message when you have a new e-mail, there's no other icon that looks like the one you describe (I've checked my manual)

could mean its an inactive sim. one sim i have has a logo on the screen.

I must admit that I have never seen that icon before. I have searched through recent SE manuals to no avail. The only thing that isnt mentioned is a voicemail message. I know that Orange send a message to your phone when you have a voicemail waiting for you?
