I have an F500i (since it was released in Australia) and I've never had this problem...
But then, I get regular firmware upgrades; maybe you should try getting a firmware upgrade.
Take your F500i to an authorized Sony Ericsson repair center and request a firmware upgrade; it's free if your phone is still under warranty!

Turn off your phone and then wait a few minutes. Then turn it on again. It has happened to me before on my T300 when i put in a huge screen saver file and then tried to delete it because it took up all the space.
