Does the P9 actually have any problems making or recieving calls or texts? Hows the call quality compare between the two phones?
If the ability to make calls or the quality is much worse on the P9 then the phone may be faulty. If the quality is the same on both phones then don't worry about the number of signal bars you have.

Maybe before letting go of the P900, try doing a master reset and/or an online update. Hopefully the bars (or the actual strength itself) will show some improvement.
