for basic mapping software try
www.nhgps.com.
matched up with my rikaline bluetooth gps reciever from
www.gpsforless.co.uk (wolves based).
nhgps only shows point on map downloaded from net and records tracks, doesn't tell you"turn left, turn right",still good though.

Hey all, I was wondering if there is any software that allows route calculation without GPS?
I remember one for Palm I think, where you used the CD software on your computer first, then it saved the route as a .rut file or sumthing, and you put it on your palm, and the reader software on ur palm will tell you where to go.
Once you get to a "Waypoint", you just press a button, and it'll give you your next direction.
It was really useful, because you didn't have to save a map of the entire city on your pda, and you got route guidance that was almost as easy as gps... The only difference being that you had to press a button every now and again (when u get to a corner or sumthing.).
Oh and with this software, you could go off-route by a certain amount (you could tell the software how many "levels" of adjoining streets you want it to load (The default being 4).
Any software like this? Or anyone willing to write software like this? I'd gladly pay for something this good..
Nick

hi all, hi NILS7, a few question about tomtom and P910 , please answer if you can:
1) the P910 CPU is fast enough for Tomtom? examples of slowdown routing? (i use now a ppc asus 620bt for tomtom and my smart P910 for all other stuff, and i think the P910 is a little bit slow : i don't like to see: turn right in 150 mt ... when the turn is 5 mt ... , what your experience? )
2) i use sometime tomtom mobile for nokia 6600, symbian os and he work like a charm: same experience on P910?
3) is possible to use tomtom on P910 in landscape mode?
TIA
Cristiano

Has anyone used wayfinder on the Sony p900/p910???
I work in an IT department and need gps solution ASAP.. From speaking with route66 and TOMTOM (aka black hole) i gather they won't have a product for at least a couple of months

I used wayfinder on my P900 and I love it.
route 66 will DEFFINATLY not work on anything less than a P910 but is due for release next week, the manual can now be downloaded from 66.com. tom tom there is still no news but again it is likely it will only work on P910

does connecting to the maps over gprs take long??
The whole advantage that TOMTOM had in my mind was the ability to download your maps onto a memory stick.. .

maps on the memory stick, good and bad.
The maps dont take long to download to be honest. The time is mostly waiting for the device to render the info as with Wayfinder you can pre-download certain areas so you dont have to download them. I can see tomtom being the same.
The advantage of wayfinder is if you forget to load a map, dont have time or go somewhere you wernt expecting it dosnt matter. The device will download all the info you need. With onboard if you havnt pre-cached the info. Then your stuffed. Wayfinder also has an entire servers worth of maps, points of intrest and other info. The onboard answers have to cut corners to fit onto a memory stick.
Wayfinder is very fast at calculating routes as it tells the server where to go and the server does all the work and sends the route back. onboard the device has to do this and can take some time on longer routes.
Onboard does have the advantage of being cheaper to run and you only have to pay to download traffic info. But the GPRS costs are small, a route takes up 5k. Thats £0.00488281 if your business has a £1 per meg gprs charge, if its £2 per meg which is for most users thats still only about £0.01. I tend to always route on route mode so no maps, but a journy from london to preston takes about 100k in map downloads as it goes (downloads a little as you go) which is about 10p - 20p depending on your tarrif. Free for me as I get 25mb free GPRS.
for me the server solution was the ideal one. I didnt have to plan my route, I could just hop in the car and go. My montly costs for wayfinder is about £3
Even if i did have a P910 I dont think I would go for tomtom. Its expensive. for your money you get UK only or your region. Traffic cams is another £60 a year (free with wayfinder) traffic jam info is again about £40 (£17.50 on wayfinder). Yes it does 3d and landscape mode but 3d is nothing but a gimmik and landscape is no good when its mounted in my car
There are pros' and cons' to them all. Its down to what you want and runnign costs.
