I agree with wiz. As for battery, it only drains when you request or send some data..i've tried this..

I've experienced this ONCE with my K700i (3 day old), I sent an email, then after it has been sent the blue 'globe' image on top-left still shows
and I just have to have it removed as my connection charges me - continuously ! I turned the fone OFF, then ON again!

This works out to be pretty convenient for us in India...gprs is quite cheap and theres unlimited access at a flat fee..i used to receive calls wth the gprs globe on and never missed a connection on my k700..

H m m m . . . what I know is that the local network charges the user depending on the kilobyte (kb) he/she have downloaded, in effect to visit various sites, or even just it's homepage, you are already downloading some kb/s on your fone. That's how it works here pal. Though it only costs php 0.25/kb downloaded . . .

JN is right. So even if u r always connected u only for for the traffic and that's all. And about the other starting topic: u r always connected and if it disconnects is cuz the operators try to save some band for users who really need it. This means that if u r connected for a few hours and the system "sees" u r not using the gprs will disconnect so others might have a chance to use it. All u have to do is open the browser or the mail and the system will auto-connect allowing u to use ur gprs. To be always connected just turn ur e-mail client auto-checking e-mails every 4 hours and u'll always be connected. quite simple. I know this for a fact, 1st hand from an engineer working for an operator over here.

I am in Romania. Here i have a 3$ subscription and i have 10MB included but at 3G speed( 56kbps/sec) and any extra MB would cost me 30 cents. If i find it insufficient i'll go at 50 MB per month for 10$/ month. Which is excellent!
