Same problem here, nVidia nForce, the bloody winamp wo'nt go in 5.1 even with all those plugins and addons.
I never experienced slowdown in media player, it's faster than winamp but yeah I use

@nickrooster i have got a asus motherboard with soundmax onboard sound the control panel software of its driver has options to choose stereo, quad of surround speakers the drivers can be found here

but i dont know if they will work as soundmax website says that there are different versions of drivers for different motherboard . i would recommnd sblive 5.1 card cheap and good.

Yeah, I've only ever used soundmax on a via chipset board so maybe it's a feature of the via chipset

easy way to spee dup media player.. use "Media Player Classic"
It doesn't look flahs, inf act it looks like media player 6 but its small, isn't from MS and brings back all the usable options.

or vlc... but they are better for videos, winamp is still the best for music!

However, I still can't get this 5.1 problem working. I mean, Soundmax DOES have "Virtual Surround" but that basically increases the sound separation between the left and right sides in a pair of headphones in order to give the illusion of surround sound (as well as providing minor effects to appear front and behind).
I still can't find it!

maby you should post in winamp.com forums about this problem, and see if there is anyone who can help you. And then post here if you get a solution!
