some info on the PSX

About the console - hype, hopes and hi-fi

The PSX is a high-end electronics device designed to run PS2 and PlayStation games, connect to broadband and record both DVDs and television. The unit is also be capable of receiving analogue television broadcasts to an included TV tuner. Two versions were released on Saturday the 13th December in Japan, one with 160GB hard drive (PSX DESR-5000), and one with 250GB hard drive (PSX DESR-7000).

While the PSX does not come with a Dual Shock controller, a PSX compatible controller is available seperatly. An all new remote control is also included. The remote control, which is incompatible with the standard PS2, features the standard PlayStation brand "shape" buttons along with a button that allows you to instantly stop a game. You'll also be able to control recording and playback via the Dual Shock using on-screen menus that allow for quick access to recorded programs, pictures and games, as well as video editing features.

While Sony suggests that the PSX controller may not be compatible with the Playstion One or Playstation 2, we tested using the PSX controller on a PS2 console and vice-versa and it worked fine with Guitar Freaks 4 and Winning Eleven 6. We opened the controllers and while there are some differences in the design, they seem to be compatible. Also while some websites were reporting that the PSX comes with a USB2.0 port, it is in fact only USB 1.1.

Recording is compatible with the DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. Initially, the system will not support recording to the DVD+RW format, but future upgrades downloadable via the system's network adapter, are expected to add this support. Users will be able to dub between DVDs at a rate of 12x.

In order to release the PSX before the end of year Sony have dropped a number of features from the console which were originally announce. Features that were originally announced but are not available on release include:

MP3 Playback support - Sony currently uses ATRAC, similar to their Minidisc format instead of MP3 format

BB Navigator - The BB Navigator software is not included and incompatible with the PSX. You can still access online games however using the included network adapter but cannot access games channels.

DVD dubbing at 24X - This has now been changed to 12X for recording from HDD to DVD. DVD+R/RW support is also not included in the initial release.

Sony has promised that all of these features should be available early next year once testing is complete and existing users will be able to update the PSX using the included Ethernet adapter
