the US apple store WILL NOT ship anything outside the US. So only way around this is if you know someone in the US who can order it and then ship it on to UK. If they label it as a gift then you shouldnt have any worries with import tax either. If it isnt labelled as a gift ie. if you buy it off a legit company in the US, who are unlikely to be willing to lie on the customs form and say its a gift with a small monetary value when infact it isnt, then you will have to pay import taxes.
Also the shipping costs to uk mean that at the end of the day you only save a couple of quid. And also apple could be funny and refuse to honour the warranty on a us model that has been shipped to the uk.

EDIT: forgot to say the one advantage of gettin it from the US is it doesnt have the crap sound limiter on it that they have on the UK version that means i cant turn it up loud enough
very annoying! Plus definately make sure you get a new model with better battery life as the battery life on mine is pants
