Ah yea, but

1.) I'm getting a nice 5GB one for £70 which is about 1cm thick and 7cm in diameter (== tiny)

2.) £70/2 = 35 or just under 3 years. After that you're paying more than you would have in the first place

3.) Copying tons of data across USB 2.0 (60MB/s) is a LOT faster than uploading it through a connection with a through put of maybe 64KB(0.0625MB) a second.

Yup, and as soon as I stop fiddling with my current site design (and now max99's as well) I'm gonna get some for www.robotsandlife.com (if nobody nicks in now I've told everyone my plans of course)
