I'm considering these two phones, but stand back for the über-n00b question I'm about to ask...

What is "smartphone" and "Symbian Serie 60"?

symbian series 60 are what you might call the operating system running on the phone, symbian is used by both nokia and sony ericsson Pxxx phones, but in different versions, series 60 is the version running on some nokia phones. Smartphones are phones running an "open" operating system like for instance symbian or windows mobile, operating systems that will allow third party developers to develop new applications that can be installed on the phone.

K750 is not a smartphone, it does not run any open operating system which will allow new applications to be installed, it runs on a static operating system contained in the firmware. It only supports Java applications which have limitations in what they can do. New functionality has to be written into the firmware by the manufacturer.

Smartphones have the advantage of being able to add new thirdparty applications, but are generally slower in operating (atleast the nokia series 60 are) compared to non smartphones. They also have the disadvantage of being able to receive virus, which is not possible on a non smartphone.

One cannot say that smartphones performs better in itself, usually non smartphones actually performs better because the operating system are smaller, faster, and their functions are optimised for their purpose, while smarphones operating systems are like windows, bigger, slower, memoryhugging, etc. , but on smartphones you will be able to add better functions thorugh thirdparty applications that maybe fits your needs better than the static functions of a non smartphone.

Therefore its a matter of what you need from your phone, many people automatically state that smartphones is better but never consider the fact that they may never install a single new application on it. In fact by far most smartphone buyers doesnt know they bought a smarphone and never use it as such. They just bought a phone and only use it in its standard form, which is often not better than a non smartphone.

@numb... Good explanation there. You're right, many people using smartphones hardly use any of their functions. This message was posted from a K700i
