thats what i have ALWAYS thought about... im suprised noone has tried to edit the software, and add phone numbers instrad of the emergency numbers, and make free calls... i wonder about that. i knwo it is illigal, but still.
@fatreg, your sim identifies who you are... you know how phones can be unlocked right? then it can work on any network (network that ur sim is on) well when u make an emergency call, its like its automatically unlocked for those numbers, so it will work on all networks. thats the best way i know how to explain it.

*lol*

dude THAT wont happen unless yor gurlfrnd works in the callcntr & helps u out. As for your HOW- i think the capability to detect the signal & freq. , initiation & such techni'lities STILL ARE with the handset, rite? So its possible w/o SIM.

still makes no sense to me!
ive got here in front of me a NK 7600 no sim and it would appear i am wrong
if i try and phnoe 999 with no sim in, it says its attemting the call then says theres no network coverage!
which i can understand. but im sure ive seen it working before.
ahh might try me a bit of moto hex editing and get the emergetny numbers changed!

Wont you also need to hack the carrier's systems instead ? Coz the damn servers should treat the number you want to dial as an Emergency num. As such, there has to be someone hand in glove let the sys fool to treat other nums as emergency & let you connect to them !!

As far as i know:
when you wana make a emergency call any operator in range will/should allow you to make that emergency call.
It goes to your nearest emergency centre no. like the police station.
And yes the call is free.
But the thing is that not all operators support this service, in order to prevent their network usage for free.
Like in delhi(INDIA), i think only the HUTCH network allows to you make the emergency calls.
It can be taken something as a free public-service the network operator provides.
Hope that helps
