That was what i was also thinking. It could be because of the CMOS sensor. I believe the s700 does not have any problems with photos taken in bad light as it has a CCD sensor.

It's digital noise from the sensor, as others said. But the banding is very distinctive, and suggests maybe its not strictly a hardware problem. I've noticed the same in low light shots. A product like Noise Ninja might help you get rid of some of it.
