for listening, mp4s at 96kbps isn't that bad IMO, but normally I use a minimum of 128kpbs stereo mp3s or 112kbps stereo mp4s.
Edit: I use either CDex, iTunes, or dbPowerAmp for conversion.

Some of these low bitrates but with additional smoothing and effects might not sound distorted or too bad but surely they don't sound as the artist intended.

The best way to judge the quality of the compressed sound is to compare it with the original uncompressed file or any hi-quality version of the sound. It is important to maintain the quality of the original sound as much as possible. Most of the time the degradation of the sound when you compress it too much is very evident in the high frequencies like cymbals, strings, hi-note vocals, etc. -- they usually start to sound too artificial and lifeless, IMO.

I believe the #1 rule here is: There simply is NO substitute for LESS compression.

It should be a compromise between size and quality.

Is mp3 better than aac? never tried compressing thru aac since i still don't have the software... ok... so how small can ur 128kbps go? mine 3.9 - 4mb.. depending how long the song... i read somewhere that the 512mb that comes with the w8 would have more ore less 300 songs, am i right? is that true or are they just enfautating?? hmm.. and what format might they be using??

512Mb is just that, no matter what phone or device uses it, it doesn't affect the card's ability to store more or less content

In your case, if you're averaging 3.5Mb per song at the quality levels you're comfortable with, you'll get upwards of a 150 songs, or 12-15 complete albums. It doens't dpend on the device or even the card itself, it depends on how YOU compress the songs

aac is better than mp3. it gives you same sound quality at lower bit rates- i.e. 128kbps mp3 is like 96kbps aac.
