I bought it online from Vodafone UK.

I went into one of their shops, they have swapped the SIM and all appears ok again...

Go in to your network search, set it on manual search and and select a network you are not permitted to use, ie Virgin or any other network.
Leave it there and the phone will go gack to Voda after a few seconds.
That way you "force" the phone to pick up the right signals.
If that doesn't do the trick you better take it back to the shop.
(Remember to bring the reciet!)

I lied it is back again - so

1) I have a new SIM now (not SIM that is at fault?)
2) Old SIM could also stop someone else's phone from working (maybe not the phone that is at fault?)

So what is it? Why does my phone work until the 3G symbol appears on the screen? As soon as it does, I have an expensive brick to carry around!

Looks like it is possibly not being able to identify athe 2.5g network when it moves out of Voda's 3g coverage areas
