That is indeed true, infact both have become economic powerhouses, both are independent and Japan especially enjoys a high standard of living.

Hardly. Most of the world realsies what a nutjob Kim Jong Il actually is and that his regime presents a very real danger to world peace. Even China has been taking a tougher stance on North Korea. Most of the world, including the U.S., doesn't want a war on the Korea Peninsula, however, I don't think many would object to the U.S. acting to stop North Korea should it decide to start a war.

If they toss in a nuke. Most of you don't remember Hiroshima and the destruction it caused. Most of you don't remember the Lukemia victims. Many of you have played way too many video games to think that there are no repercussions.
The U.S. would only use nuclear weapons if North Korea used them first. The U.S. knows how much is at stake, and wouldn't risk the repercussions of a nuclear attack unless a nuclear option was absolutely necessary.

I they bomb and leave. Think about the aftermath of the war. You're leaving a country that's heavily bombed without support, without a government, without infrastructure. You end up with 2 possible scenarios.
1. Anarchy
2. Military dictatorship
And in all honesty, #1 probably will lead to #2 anyway.
The U.S. wouldn't 'leave'. What would probably happen is that South Korean troops would take control of the North with a view to the eventual reunification of the two Koreas. The U.S. for its part would probably seek to help rebuild North Korea as it did with Germany and Japan after WWII. Not only is this a good move in terms of the humanitarian situation, it also solidifies U.S. influence in the region.

The US government, also requires the support of the people (remember it's a democratic country?). You're already fighting a 2 front war, with a 3rd pressure cooker always about to explode (Isreal vs. WHOMEVER). Public support for the "war against terror" is already waning. Increasing casualties, and hello...what happened to the WMDs? Declaring war on ANYONE even if an ally is bombed, will be tough. The public does not want more of their mothers, fathers, husbands, sisters, brothers, wives, children, friends, co-workers dying; sacrificing lives for something that's not an immediate threat.
Declaring war would be tough in the present climate. However, if the North launched an attack on the South then I think U.S. public opinion would probably be for helping South Korea. If the North were to use a nuclear weapon on either the U.S. or one of its allies then U.S. public opinion would almost certainly be for doing whatever was necessary to stop North Korea.

The resolution to N.Kr MUST be a diplomatic one. Chinese and Russian governments don't want it any other way. You will only unite them against the US if the US decides to unilaterally move in. S.Kr doesn't have a strong enough army. Japan is armed enough for defence. not for an assault. no one else in the region is armed well enough to stand behind the US. Tony Blair was pretty much forced to step down for his support in Iraq. Canada and Australia are abhorrent to war. Spain pulled out its support to the 'war on terror'. The french are no where to be found. Bombing N.Kr is thus NOT an option.

I agree that the solution must be a diplomatic one, the alternatives are far too horrible to contemplate. However, if it comes down to war then the U.S. can and will act. It would certainly be better for the U.S. if it had support in such a war beyond South Korea and Japan, but to be frank the U.S. doesn't need support if it really sets its mind to defeating North Korea.
China and Russia could protest all they want, but if the U.S. felt that it had to act then there wouldn't be much either could do to stop it short of war, which I doubt either would risk over North Korea. Simply put, the U.S. is powerful enough to force its will through when encessary. If it is pushed too far then there is no country that is capable of opposing it.

I am NOT sure if the inevitable attack on Pyangyang WAS included in Nostradamus' crystal ball

The WAR in the gulf (90's) was made mention and the FALL of the TWIN towers !

@scotsboyuk...
the diatribe was meant for people like jojo who think that the US should bomb all members of the 'axis of evil'. i realise that there's more to it. i didn't want to make my diatribe too long.
You're absolutely right that the US is VERY unlikely to call a pre-emptive strike let alone nuke anyone just cos.
As for China and Russia. I'm not sure that the US is prepared to go up against both of them at the same time at this juncture.

@bandit - Well . . . . having seen and watched the FLAWs in US style-attacks .. . well, I can just say that it would just be one of their LAST recourse - Nuke Bomb, . . . they are NOT that good anymore with their ground-deployment-attack-strategies . . . so, why WASTE sooooo much money (again, if ever . . .)
There's a saying that: He who LAUGHS last . . . HAS the Nuke !

Dash it man, don't be afraid to string these things out! It's a glorious day for me to see someone else having a jolly good ramble. Huzzah I say!

I don't think it is necessarily a question of the U.S. 'going up against' them, rather them going up against the U.S. If the U.S. considers an atatck necessary then both China and Russia have to decide whether or not it is worth opposing the U.S.

and whether or not they feel that opposing the US and preventing a greater american presence in the region is worth more than a nuclear and unpredictable NK.

HAHA....yes. a good diatribe is glorious. except that i don't have time to elaborate (actually, it's called being LAZY).
as for the US vs. RU&CN. I don't see it happening anytime soon. All parties have too much at stake to head into battle. Besides. Chinese people don't care about peace and stability, so long as there's $$$ to be made! PUWHAHAHAHAA =)~
