Funny you should mention the fact you had to cut your headphones to get them to fit as i just read that some where else just now. To be honest there is no way i am going to start risking wrecking my Shure headphones just to fit one device. I really don't get why on a Music playing device they have used a recessed jack seems incredibly silly and pointless to me as you either have to resort to cutting your current headphones jack plug or buying an adapter what a total pain and plain stupid IMO.
@all
I know this thread is talking about the 02 deal but just thought it may be worth mentioning as the iPhone will also be available from the Apple shops same as in the US. IMO that means there is nothing to stop anyone going into a Apple shop and buying one outright with no contract and then using all the available and easy to follow guides to unlock it and use it with any Sim. In fact there is already a listing on E-Bay for a service where you can either take, send or meet someone that will do it for you @£50 for those that aren't comfortable doing these sorts of things on their devices.

@Marc
I would have thought that you had to sign up to O2 even if you purchased it at the Apple store! It surprises me they aren't forcing the deal on you in there too!

You sign up to the contract through iTunes at home on your PC/Mac - you don't do it in-store.
Therefore, like in the US, you can just walk into an Apple, O2 or CPW store and buy the phone for £269, without signing up for a contract in-store.
However, note that the UK iPhones come with version 1.1.1 firmware which isn't yet released, and therefore the current activation hacks and SIM unlock processes have not been tested on it.
I would be very surprised if the current methods still work on the v1.1.1 iPhone. Apple said at the launch they are actively closing the loopholes.
But if they do still work, you could buy an iPhone for £269, (h)activate it for use with iTunes and probably use an existing O2 SIM. Or SIM unlock it for use on another network.

Me thinks i will just be buying one outright from an Apple Store and sticking my current O2 Contract sim in
The question is, does the N95 make way for it or does it stay....

you cant just put you sim in and go. the only way would be taking an 18 month contract with o2, or by doing the unofficial unlock....

AFIAK, you don't have to "unlock" (i.e. SIM unlock) the phone to use another O2 SIM - you just have to activate it for use with iTunes (so you can sync stuff to it).
DVD Jon released a way of activating the iPhone without signing up to a contract for the US model. Hopefully his method will still work with the UK version, or a new 'activation' hack will emerge.
"Activating" the phone for use on O2 (or AT&T in the US), and "unlocking" the phone for use on another network are different things.

This will still sell very well even if it is really expensive.

The Metro has a half page on the iphone today, with the following headline
"iPhone can be yours for a measly £1,259"
it highlighted the 18 month ownership cost for the £55 tarrif saying its also £69 more than in the US.
Yeah, their forgetting one little thing, you'd buy the tariff regardless, it's the £269 thats the expensive part. But, people are dumb enough to pay it, so they'll pay it either way.

as of right now there are plenty of ways to activate your iphone.. but everything is based on firmwares 1.02 and below..
on pc use ibrickr
and on mac use apptapp...both are very easy to use... if you really want an iphone i would say to get an already unlocked one from resellers now..since the o2 price isn't that great anyway
unlocking efforts are also for 1.02 only right now... the UK one will ship with 1.11 so no one knows if the same unlocking will work.. but most likely it will not..
maybe we'll have to go back to the hardware unlock..
