This is from SE's page

"Multiple navigation

XPERIA™ X1 lets you interact via numerous intuitive ways. Touch, full QWERTY, 4-way key and optical joystick - you switch seamlessly between operation modes. "

"Optical joystick navigation
Brush your finger over the navigation key to move pointer on screen."

So optical keypad is a 4 way dpad and a optical slab like on laptops.

very nice but only a 65,536 tft color surely it`s time they got 16.2m like nokia or even a 262,144-colour TFT like the k850i

WM devices only ue 65k colours.

PK Whats the battery life like on this phone? I hope something like this wont be ruined by a poor batter such was the experience on the N95.

Aint you got anything better to do then criticize...?????

Also, I'm not sure if I really get SE's overall strategy based on today's announcements. Here's why, specifically:

1. New premium line launched with a WinMob device with microSD support. Rest of the line (today and all previous SE phones) runs other UIs and supports Sony's proprietary memory stick format. So is the future multiple OS's and multiple memory card formats, or just WM and SD?

2. If SE is putting a 5mp camera on the G900, which is billed as "the ultimate organizer" why aren't they putting a 5mp camera on the X1, which is billed as "the ultimate multimedia phone"?

3. If w980 has 8gb internal memory, why does x1 only have 400 mb?

I think my criticism is fueled by this feeling of, "Wow, lots of interesting new stuff from SE today" that turned into "Huh, I'm not sure why some phones have some features and other phones don't, and what the overall strategy here is." Seems like they could have consolidated the new lineup into maybe 2 or 3 fewer handsets, and also that the new premium device should be entirely tricked out with a top of the line camera with Xenon flash. Their marketing strategy is really baffling me - SE fanboys love it, obviously, but I fear that the rest of the market is underwhelmed right now.

PK Whats the build quality like on this? Build quality is so important on sliders so I really hope this phone wont suffer from loose ends or a wobbly sliding mechanism.

It is not the phone to end all phones...the P5 still exists.

SE will never make a WM device with higher specs then their symbian UIQ one.
They'll probably introduce a new Pseries on cebit.
