my 2c the p810 if real is fugly. p800 is a fine device - needs to be thinner and have 802.11 built in to make it even better, and ok the video cam app.. otherwise if se 'upgrades' the concept I hope they do better than what this p810 is speccing out to be.

Oh yeah, improve the desktop sync sware too.

and put a standard 3.5 headphone jack on it.

SE wont include Wi-Fi coz:
- They developed Bluetooth.
- Its a European company.

From what I see on the BBC, WiFi is becoming huge in the UK (I don't know about the rest of Europe). Here in the US, I know a couple of people who use it a home, but that about all. I've never heard anything in the US about so called "warchalking", where people mark WiFi access point on the streets by placing chalk marks on walls, etc. (Perhaps, that's just not happening here in Southern California, because no one walks anywhere!)

With single chip dual mode (Bluetooth/802.11) radios the added cost of having both features should be fairly small.

But bluetooth isn't a rival to wifi, they're meant for different purposes. I still don't think they would put wifi in though due to battery drain.

Yes, they are designed for different purposes. That's why dual-mode chipsets are coming out.

I don't think that the latest 802.11 chipsets' power drain is really that much higher than Bluetooth's especially when seen in the context of a backlit screen and everything else that drains power in a smartphone. Typical power for WiFi cards are 250mA for receive and 350mA transmit at 3V. That's pretty high, but some of the newer chipsets claim 100mA, which matches the higher end of the power spectrum for BT.

One of the biggest problems with 802.11 is the high standby power consumption, but again that should drop as optimised (and less rushed to market) designs are released.

If the power management is handled right, then 802.11 could even use less power for bulk transfer of data (e.g., syncing), just because it's around 7-8 times faster. So even if it takes twice as much power per second of on-time, becauase it can transfer the data and then turn off in 1/8 of the time of BT, the total power consumption for the transfer would be around a quarter!

Interestingly, WiFi would allow for faster sync and backup times than allowed by USB 1.1!

Maybe the P810 will include super-range bluetooth, like the Z1010. The Z1010 has a bluetooth range of about 100 meters = 330 feet. Who needs WiFi?

man, I want a quadmode phone (Wi-Fi, CDMA2000, GSM, and WCMDA) with all the bands (450, 850, 900, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100) that would be superphat. With Wi-Fi, you can get Voice over IP, and the other three standards would be great for global roaming!!!!

BT has the bandwidth for voice (obviously) so if you're connected to a computer on the internet, I don't see why you can't do Voice over IP.
