E3 2004: UPDATED: GTA: SAN ANDREAS - FIRST PLOT DETAILS!
Not many, but some. Here's what you'll be up to on PS2 this Autumn
11:44 Who is Carl Johnson? Is he the guy on the BMX in the first set of GTA: San Andreas screens released yesterday? Or the guy posing in front of his open top low-rider?
Whoever he is, he's in trouble. Five years ago Carl escaped the urban hellhole of Los Santos, San Andreas - a city packed to the rafters with Hollywood hustlers, reclusive millionaires and dirty dealers. But now, Carl's mum has been murdered and, as he returns home to try and hold his family together, he's framed by a couple of bent cops.
San Andreas is set to be a far larger game than either GTA 3 or Vice City, since SA is actually an entire state. We've heard about three cities so far - the aforementioned Los Santos as well as San Fierro and Las Venturra, and there will be open countryside between each one!
Lead character Carl has a family, too, so we could be looking at a much more intricate plot as he struggles to save them and clear his name. Building interiors are now much more detailed, and you can commit burglaries as well as gamble your hard stolen cash away in casinos. A new stamina meter means you need to stop off for junk food every now and again to keep your energy up, plus you'll be able to recruit your own gang as back-up.
Add to that a classic early 90s West Coast setting (musically, think G-funk, grunge, the classic years for Detroit techno) and we could be looking at another potential Rockstar classic. GTA: San Andreas is due for release in the UK on October 22nd.

Characters

The City / Map
The game will take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. Confirmed - GI
The three cities from above will be named Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Ventura in the game. Confirmed - GI
Each city is the same size as Vice City. Confirmed - GI
The entire game will be about Four to Six times bigger than Vice City! Confirmed - GI
San Fierro will contain hills and will be more driving based. Confirmed - GI
You can drive from Los Santos, through the countryside, up a mountain and into San Fierro, then onto Las Ventura. Confirmed - GI
Driving through the desert will be vibrant and alive with weird things to see. Confirmed - GI
Buildings
There will be a lot more buildings with open interiors. Confirmed - GI
Graphics
The graphics engine has been tweaked. Smog will be present in LA, and real-time reflections on cars, windows, and mirrors, as well as new techniques like radial lighting, which allows for more realistic shadowing, and soft-shadow lighting for interior levels will be present. Confirmed - GI
Everything in the game now has independent models for day and night to give better lighting and shadowing. Confirmed - GI
GamePlay
The game will have rag-doll physics, or “impact animation” in Rockstar's words Confirmed - GI
In the Las Ventura city, you will be able to buy and build a casino and then run it. Confirmed - GI
You can then gamble your money in the casino. Confirmed - GI
You need to eat to retain your stamina. If you eat too much fast food, you become fat and pedestrians mock you for being fat. You also run slower. To remedy this, you can go to a gym to exercise. Confirmed - GI
You can now rob homes. The robberies will require skill and planning, however. Confirmed - GI
You can recruit gang members and use them to do four person drive-by’s. Confirmed - GI
Weapons
Your character can dual wield pistols and potentially other weapons. Confirmed - GI
The choice of weapons will match the weapons of the early 90's. Confirmed - GI
Vehicles
There will be pimped-out lowriders, and 90’s versions of some GTA3/VC cars will return. Confirmed - GI
There will be bicycles. Confirmed - GI
Artificial Intelligence
Enemy/pedestrian AI will be greatly revamped and they will think more logically. You can't beat someone to death in broad daylight and not have people notice and react. Confirmed - GI
Your enemies will be smarter, which will make robbing houses take a lot of skill. Confirmed - GI
Music
There will be a rap station, but there will be a variety of other stations as always. Confirmed - GI
