A few things:
Firmware versions can be network-specific. Therefore, generic

FW upgrades will not work on an Orange handset. However,

and Orange will release Orange-specific firmware versions (normally takes a while after the generic ones!) and approved

Service Centres will be able to upgrade the FW (e.g. CPW, though whoever said they will already have it is wrong. Most likely, it will not be available within 2-3 months of launch, so says past experience (e.g. P900).
It may be possible to overwrite the Orange FW with the generic

FW at some point, but it is not yet.
The CSR that Simonco spoke to is incorrect on almost every point. Orange may not have a problem with trying to overwrite their FW, but I presume they didn't mention that invalidates your warranty and that part of Orange Care. I'm certain it is not a "mistake" to omit the shortcut functionality - Orange have a record of doing stupid things to user interfaces, in the name of branding them, that leave out crucial features on previous handsets, though it's odd that the Orange manual that comes in the box mentions them at all!

will not revert the FW to the generic version if you "take it to them", as this can't be done, and even if it could, functionality such as Line 2 would not be lost, as it works perfectly well in standard generic unlocked handsets from most manufacturers, including

. This is Orange crap designed to justify the silly branding they burden you with in the first place!

Just thought I'd share this. I Just spoke to Orange re: the missing shortcut menu. They were totally clueless and said it should be there. they referred me to the Sony Ericsson Help line 08705 237 237. I just spoke to someone very helpful who said as we know Orange put the sotware on. He said it is possible to remove the software and that the phone would have to be taken to a SonyEricsson service centre, he gave me the details of one in Barnet. He explained that the new software would only be installed if the service centre were convinced you were out of contract with orange i.e after 12months. He was adamant that the Orange customisations could be removed.

A little off topic, but can someone with an ORANGE k700 confirm:
when the phone is put into silent, you can still hear the camera sound, and you can still play music through the media player???
I thought that all UK k700s didn't play the camera sound in silent mode?

There's an internet deal from Orange on their website which says you can have 200 x-network anytime minutes plus 500 texts a month for £30. It's one of their special deals under Your Plan 200. Go to the tariffs area of their website, select "I call any network any time" and you'll see the various special offer plans there.

Orange offered me 500 any time/network minutes for £25 and 30 free texts a month for 3 months. I just bolted on 60 more for £4. Not a bad deal really.
And they gave me the K700 for £20. Now I just need them to add the shortcut feature back in.
