yea night video is a bit soft..

camera was probably having trouble focusing with all the moving objects coming at it and also all the changes in metering from the advertisements to the headlines to the dark areas.. definitely a GOOD test for Z1's night video capability. I'd like to see that scene with One/1020/GS4 to see how it compares.

EDIT:
here's HTC one in a similar scene for comparison. it's about the same, if not worse.

and for kicks, here's 1020 in a night video in good ole NYC this was taken while moving, so take that into consideration. but image quality seems comparable to me..

with these as comparisons.. Z1 night time video looks pretty good

Yeah indeed moogoo. The One and 1020 shots do seem about the same so Z1 is definitely not worse But frankly, I was comparing Z1 to Sony Cybershot digicams which do a better job. Since the sensor size and optics are similar, I expected Z1 to perform as good.

ah. well, that scene seems to be very difficult for any compact camera to meter and focus well and quickly.

been forever since i've seen a cybershot compact camera video sample..

and here's your cybershot digicam night video comparison for fun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr6IkmKS2yQ

the cybershot hx1.. has 1/2.4" sensor and sony G lens.

have to realize that the hx1 has a MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger lens in comparison. and obviously is thicker and is a dedicated camera. for a phone, i think Z1 comes pretty damn close!

moogoo, that's a 3 year old camera

Here's a more apt comparison. HX30V with same sensor size

Much more worrysome than the screen (Am I getting old, I even like the Z´s screen!) is the purportedly lousy battery life! What got my hopes high was the spread rumor that it would have a renewed battery technique, now the reviews I read (linked here in the last two pages), complain about battery????
