Im not keen on the designs either. Waiting for a new xperia mini or mini pro(xperia u is not the answer as its way too big). Also Tapioca is to low spec to be mini upgrade and would be a downgrade. Are Sony dropping the mini line or somthing?

i am so pissed !!!
every manufacturer makes high-specd phones with HUGE displays !!

hey, I would want a 3,5 inch phone with 1,2-1,5 GHz DUAL CORE, 8 Mp camera, 16-32 Gb internal memory, 1 Gb RAM,

wtf is wrong with them , I don't like to carry a tablet in my pocket

where is the RAY successor?

We have three phones for now. Three different phones based on price and size. A person who wants a rather cheap and compact phone will go for U. Another one who can afford a more expensive one will go for P. Lastly, someone who wants the best specs available will go for S or Ion when is globally available in summer. All phones have internal memory but not not all of it can be used from the user. 6 of 8 gb for U and 13 of 16 gb for P. Xperia U is Ray's sucessor, the new minis will be unveiled later in the year, May or June probably.

I think they make a huge mistake with the uniform design of their phones for 2012. In 2011 the specifications was nearly the same, almost all the phones gave the same user experience, the screen size, camera resolution and battery capacity, or the qwerty keyboards were the diferrences. But, I think in 2011 most of the users made their purchasing decisions based on the phones design, not on the slightly different specifications.
In this year the decision of buying a Sony phone won't be a decisive question, but a yes/no question. I think Sony just don't takes in consideration that people can say no for their phones. The desing can be called distinctive but it can be called boring too, and I think compared to the last 10 years' SE phones it is the latter.
No microSD slot??? I suspect that's a stupid decision again by Sony. This solutions is more elegant than pushing again their own memory cards... I wouldn't be surprised if the new Sony phones would use again Sony's own cards...

If these new phones make most of you happy, than be happy with them.
I'm not disappointed, because I haven't even expected much more from Sony. I know that -for example- the Xperia S and possibly even the P and U were developed by Sony Ericsson, but I think Sony gave the directions for these phones, and for now I don't like these directions.
I'll buy an Xperia Ray or Live with Walkman, one of the last phones with Sony ERICSSON label, and I'll wait and see what happens. I had only Ericsson or Sony Ericsson phones, but in the present I'm not convinced if I'll buy Sony smartphones too...

I see your point about the risk in that if the design is not to someone's taste they will look for a phone from a different company instead of choosing a different model within the Sony brand. However is this really what consumers choose, and ultimately makes a phone company money? Taking SE's great 2011 line up, it was amazing but yet they still made a loss. Samsung on the other hand have the galaxy range, with each phone looking exactly the same. They have a pretty ugly design, but yet lots of people buy them despite this, and the S2 sold many millions.

I suppose Sony are trying to create a more closer brand recognition, others such as HTC and samsung all have their look which is carried out throughout their portfolio of phones. An HTC device can be instantly recognised with its curved shape, and maybe Sony want people to associate this design with their brand.

Sure it means things get pretty boring, (how dull does every HTC device look) but I suppose this is a fresh design and it is an amazing design at that. Apple have their own look too and have successfully carried it out for the last 5 years that they have been in the mobile phone business.

i'm sorry, but Xperia U is not a worthy Ray successor: it's bigger and heavier, while having a smaller battery, poorer camera, no SD card support, same amount of ram ... etc

and i don't want a "rather cheap and compact phone", I want a " rather expensive and compact phone", not a tablet bursting out of my pocket, that i would have to operate with 2 hands

As expected HTC launced their phones with s4. S(E) once again lost the hardware race, at least until Mint. The bad thing is that everyone, even Huawei has better SOCs than SE now. Really hope Xperia P will bring in the cash from mid-end

@king-james. Agree. Haybusa really needs to have s4, S(E) needs to have a top tier phone asap, but I fear it will be just like ION
